They would shave off her hair, feed her on a scanty allowance of rice, treat her with contempt; she would be looked upon as an unclean creature, and would die in some corner, like a scurvy dog. HEAR YE HEAR YE. "Aye, sir," said Starbuck drawing near, "'tis a solemn sight; an omen, and an ill one."
"Omen? omen?—the dictionary! If the gods think to speak outright to man, they will honourably speak outright; not shake their heads,

Shapeshifters are a unique race in that no two shapeshifters are completely alike. They are the closest to humans chronologically, and were created when the All Mother sought to create a bridge between humanity and nature. Shapeshifters are born in their human-esque form, but will always sport the tell-tale signs of their animal shift. These other forms are always mammalian, and their characteristics are generally displayed as ears and tails in the shapeshifter's natural form. During childhood, shapeshifters may find it difficult to control when they change shapes, although the first shift typically does not occur until 2 years of age. A shapeshifter's height can be closely matched to their animal forms - a shapeshifter with a mouse form will generally be smaller than a shapeshifter with an elephant form. They live relatively short lives, with an average lifespan of about 65 years. Eye and hair colors vary widely, and seem to be associated with the eye and fur colors of their animal counterparts. They are omnivorous eaters, but their diets may vary depending on their individual characteristics.
Similar to humans, shapeshifters have always revered the All Mother. Stronger than their plain counterparts, shapeshifters all across Xisin have dedicated themselves to protecting humans from the advances of werewolves and vampires alike. Many of them believe that, as the weakest but most favored by the All Mother, there is an obligation to protect the safety of humans. Unlike them, many shapeshifters have powerful magics and animal counterparts at their disposal. Not long after the Sanguine Scourge was founded, the city of Yanica became a blockaded safe-haven for any creature that felt threatened by what shapeshifters' coined "Svatur's Clan" - namely, werewolves and vampires. As interspecies relationships improved over time, Yanica was absorbed by the Kingdom of Daika and turned into a military outpost. You can still find many shapeshifters there, although they can also be found in steady numbers all throughout Xisin.
All shapeshifters have the natural ability to morph into an animal - but only one. Many are naturally inclined to take on multiple animal forms, but these are considered magical abilities and will never replace a shapeshifter's innate forms. In addition to having their own forms, some shapeshifters develop the magical ability of communicating with other animals, while many others are born with various bodily enhancements.
